Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa it is based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu, a World Heritage Site, which has a population of approximately 2000. It is located on the rim of the 20th prefecture and is near the small city of Okinomiya. Hinamizawa is so small that it only has one classroom of 15 children each at different grade levels. The teacher Chie, has to teach to the different grades. Every now and then, Keiichi teaches Mion and Rena. Hinamizawa used to be called 'Onigafuchi' meaning 'Demon's Pool' hence why everyone in Hinamizawa Village has half-demon blood.
